After completing a successful bungee launch, the next logical evolution was a swing launch. Avoiding building miniature LSMs, the next most efficient method of power transmission was with a continuous belt driven by a brushless DC motor.
The 24V motor is run with an ESC (electronic speed controller) which tells it to rotate either forwards or in reverse. Hall sensors throughout the layout, along with the Arduino code, dictate both the direction and speed of the motor as the train progresses through the course.

Features for Function:
To ensure smooth operation and maximum power transmission from the belt to the train, spring loaded bearing sleds were placed underneath its length. These provide a nearly frictionless surface for the belt to slide on as well as ensure its teeth mesh properly with the grooves on the underside of the train. All 6 printed pulleys had 2 bearings press fit into their center to guarantee an even and consistent spin. One of these pulleys was placed on an adjustable lever to act as a tensioner to add or remove any slack in the system.

The prototype train was placed on the launch to verify clearances and theoretical power transmission.
Following testing and troubleshooting, the section was taken apart and painted the colors seen in the above renders.
No individual pictures were taken after painting - to see the completed launch section, watch the video back on the construction page.
